Graduate Health Management Education

NCHL is pleased to announce 2006 plans to facilitate competency-based learning and outcome assessment in health management education. It is timely to recognize heightened interest from university programs in the NCHL Health Leadership Competency Model and the curriculum diagnostic tools and to development methods currently being used by the four graduate education demonstration sites to enhance their curricula.

I. Expansion of the Graduate Health Management Demonstration Project
The number of graduate health management programs participating in the Graduate Health Management Demonstration Project will be expanded to include up to six (6) additional demonstration sites in 2006. The purpose of the demonstration project is to improve university-based graduate health management education programs for career entry into the field by implementing competency-based learning and outcome assessment. Participating program pilot sites are expected to:
  1. Develop and implement a program-wide competency-based curriculum and assessment using the NCHL Health Leadership Competency Model
  2. Participate in the evaluation of outcomes using measures and methods specified by the NCHL evaluators. (Note: individual program outcomes will not be identified without permission of the programs)
  3. Disseminate (via presentation, publication, and Web) learning and best practices including teaching/learning materials, evaluation methods, and instrumentation.

The new demonstration sites will work collaboratively with the four existing demonstration sites—the University of Michigan, the University of Minnesota, Simmons College, and the University of Washington—to deploy the enhanced learning and assessment processes within their programs and to benchmark their progress with the other programs.

II. Dissemination of the Competency Model and Materials to the Academic Community
Plans for 2006 also include broadly disseminating the NCHL Health Leadership Competency Model, as well as the curriculum diagnostic processes and methods. NCHL will disseminate the Curriculum Analysis & Mapping Guidebook to all interested AUPHA program members and faculty. This will be followed by a Webcast conference call for all interested programs to review and discuss the Guidebook and then a June workshop to be held in conjunction with the AUPHA Annual Meeting.
