The Leadership Excellence Networks (LENS) Councils are interorganizational collaborative efforts of leading hospitals and health systems from across the country.
Specific areas of focus include:
Diversity & Inclusion
The goals of the D&I Council involve identifying and spreading best practices in pursuing a diverse leadership workforce. Over the years, the D&I Council has developed a Compendium of D&I Scorecard Measures and a D&I Succession Planning Toolkit, Employee Resource Groups Guidebook, Mentoring Program Guide, and an Unconscious Bias Lunch & Learn module. The Council also has focused its learning on improving supplier diversity, evaluating incentive compensation methodologies, providing interpreter services, engaging physicians in cultural competency efforts, creating mentor programs, implementing Healthcare Equality Index best practices, collecting REaL data, and serving transgender patients.
Physician Leadership Development
Since 2013, this Council has focused on aspects of physician development such as: preparing physicians for senior roles, developing the next generation of physician leaders, physician wellness and burnout, PLD outcomes and metrics, and physician succession planning. Work of the Council has contributed to a white paper on physician leadership best practices and three case studies highlighting exemplary PLD programs. In 2016 inter-organizational learning has centered around the topics of: emotional intelligence correlates of long-term physician development, incorporating mindfulness into PLD programs, payment models and their effect on physician engagement, and change management.
Inter-Organizational Coaching Exchange
Now in its third pilot, the Inter-organizational Coaching Exchange is an innovative opportunity for leadership development for our LENS members’ high potential leaders. The Exchange provides cross-organizational executive coaching, matching internal coaches from one LENS organization with clients from another LENS organization. The Council focuses on designing the Exchange processes, along with developing a Coaching Manual for use in the Exchange. In 2017, the Coaching Council will be sending a cohort of LENS coaches through an ICF coaching certification program to provide a developmental and network-building experience.
Talent Metrics, Analytics, & Planning
The TMAP Council focuses on defining and deploying key talent metrics within the organizations in areas such as succession planning, leadership development, organizational effectiveness, and organizational design/structure. The Council's work includes:
Analytics – sharing experiences with specific approaches to talent metrics and analytics; identifying areas of need, looking for alternative approaches
Strategic workforce planning – strengthening capabilities for assessing future workforce needs
