2023 International Healthcare Leadership Awardee Announced

CARY ADAMS, CEO OF THE UNION FOR INTERNATIONAL CANCER CONTROL, NAMED NCHL’S 2023 INTERNATIONAL HEALTHCARE LEADERSHIP AWARD WINNER

CHICAGO, September 7, 2023, – The National Center for Healthcare Leadership (NCHL) is pleased to announce that Dr. Cary Adams, chief executive officer of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), has been chosen as the recipient of the 2023 NCHL International Healthcare Leadership Award.

“Leadership development is a critical aspect of UICC’s work in the cancer community. UICC runs two programs that seek to develop leaders in cancer control of today and tomorrow. This aligns well with NCHL’s mission and work and we’re pleased to award an admirable healthcare leader who has intentionally chosen to prioritize leadership development initiatives internally and with their partners globally,” said LeAnn Swanson, chief executive officer at NCHL.

NCHL is dedicated to advancing healthcare leadership and organizational excellence by building diverse, inclusive, and collaborative relationships in the US and abroad. Inclusion of the term “in the US and abroad” in this mission statement is intentional, as a significant portion of NCHL’s portfolio of activities focuses on international healthcare. The NCHL International Healthcare Leadership Award honors a leader whose commitment, values, and contributions have made a significant and positive impact on the provision of healthcare across international borders.

“I am very honored to accept the NCHL International Healthcare Leadership Award, not just as an individual, but as a representative of the incredible UICC team, members and partners who strive tirelessly to make a difference in global cancer control. This award is a testament to the power of collective dedication, where our shared commitment to defeating cancer drives innovation, thought leadership and impact globally. Let us continue to inspire hope, make partnership happen, recognize those who aspire to it and save lives across continents,” said Adams.

Born in London, Dr. Cary Adams has a BSc Honours degree in Economics, Computing and Statistics, a Masters degree (with Distinction) in Business Administration. He is a Harvard Business School Alumni and has received two honorary doctorates for International Relations and Health. In 2009, Adams made a career change, moving from the management of international businesses in the banking sector to become CEO of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), based in Geneva. UICC is the largest international cancer NGO of its kind, with more than 1,150 member organisations represented in over 170 countries and territories. Adams has also played a leadership role on the NCD Alliance – a coalition of around 2,000 organizations working on non-communicable diseases, which include cancer, diabetes, heart, respiratory, mental and neurological diseases.

“I congratulate Cary on this distinguished recognition of his contribution to the work of UICC and the world cancer community more broadly. The award reflects Cary’s outstanding leadership in the global healthcare arena and rightfully recognises his tireless dedication, visionary leadership, and significant contributions to improving healthcare worldwide,” said Prof. Jeff Dunn AO, UICC President and Chief of Mission and Head of Research at the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

To honor his exceptional achievements, Cary Adams will be formally presented with the International Healthcare Leadership Award during NCHL’s highly anticipated 2023 Gail L. Warden Leadership Excellence Award Celebration. In addition to honoring Cary Adams, NCHL will also present co-recipients Dr. Melinda L. Estes, president and chief executive officer of Saint Luke’s Health System of Kansas City, and Jim Skogsbergh, chief executive officer of Advocate Health, with the 2023 Gail L. Warden Leadership Excellence Award.
