CHICAGO, IL, September 28, 2026 – The National Center for Healthcare Leadership (NCHL) is honored to announce that Charles Wiener, M.D., president of Johns Hopkins Medicine International and professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, has been selected as the recipient of NCHL’s 2026 International Healthcare Leadership Award. The award recognizes healthcare leaders whose vision and partnership across borders advance the quality, reach and impact of care delivered around the world.
“Dr. Charles Wiener brings a uniquely valuable perspective to global healthcare as a physician, academic leader and international executive,” said Ronald Lavater, Chief Executive Officer, International Hospital Federation. “Through his leadership at Johns Hopkins Medicine International, Dr. Wiener has built trusted partnerships that strengthen care, education and research across borders in ways that create lasting impact for patients and families. His work strongly reflects the IHF’s mission of connecting healthcare leaders globally to share knowledge, strengthen health systems and improve care.”
Dr. Wiener oversees Johns Hopkins Medicine’s international enterprises, developing sustainable, innovative collaborations that raise the standard of health care around the world, and coordinating care for global patients who travel to Johns Hopkins Medicine for highly complex treatments. Johns Hopkins Medicine International serves as the global ambassador of the Johns Hopkins Medicine mission, leveraging the institution’s knowledge base in medicine, nursing, public health, medical education, research and health care administration to advance healthcare across the globe. He previously spent three years as the division’s vice president of academic affairs and vice president of Asia operations, leading global projects in strategic planning, educational infrastructure and medical training.
A professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Wiener has earned recognition for his medical and academic leadership, including a Professors Teaching Award and a George Stuart Award for Clinical Teaching. He chaired the committee that created the school of medicine’s “Genes to Society” curriculum and serves as director emeritus of the Osler Internal Medicine Training Program, the nation’s first medical residency program. He was an associate editor of the American Journal of Medicine and has authored the last six editions of the Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine Self-Assessment and Board Review.
“Dr. Wiener embodies the kind of leadership NCHL was built to celebrate — one that reaches beyond the walls of a single institution to strengthen health care for people everywhere,” said David Schreiner, PhD, Chief Executive Officer, NCHL. “His work building lasting partnerships across borders, and his commitment to developing the leaders who will carry that work forward, exemplify what it means to lead with vision on a global scale. We are proud to honor him with this award.”
NCHL’s International Healthcare Leadership Award recognizes a leader who has advanced healthcare across borders through collaboration, innovation and the development of the next generation of global health leaders.
“I am deeply honored to receive the 2026 NCHL International Healthcare Leadership Award,” said Charles Wiener. “International healthcare is fundamentally about partnership and common goals—bringing together people with different expertise, experiences and perspectives to learn from one another and advance knowledge—all striving to improve people’s lives. I have been extraordinarily fortunate to work with colleagues not only at Johns Hopkins, but around the world who share that commitment, and this recognition reflects what we have been able to accomplish together. There remains much work to do, and I appreciate NCHL’s efforts to bring us all together.”
Dr. Wiener will be honored during NCHL’s 2026 Gail L. Warden Leadership Excellence Award Celebration, held November 17, 2026, at the Old Post Office in Chicago.
